Yates wind project filing quiet on locations

YATES – The deluge of documents filed by the perspective developer of a massive wind energy project in Orleans and Niagara counties don’t answer a major question. Where are the dozen of planned turbines, potentially more than 500-feet tall, proposed to be located? Check back later. In the preliminary scoping statement (PSS) filed to the state last week, Apex Clean Energy, provides little beyond what has been laid out in public outreach. Apex’s subsidiary Lighthouse Wind is still looking at a . . . Complete story »

Campaigners ‘totally confident’ Macritch Hill windfarm won’t get off the ground

The largest windfarm ever proposed for Angus is hanging in the balance because the sums may not add up, it has emerged. The £75 million Macritch Hill development, which would see 18 turbines stretch between Glen Prosen and Glen Isla near Kirriemuir, was to save Scottish Water one-third of its annual energy costs. A Scottish Government reporter is to decide on whether the national-scale project will get the go-ahead next year. But campaigners say the utilities giant would have to . . . Complete story »

Alex White reluctant to increase wind turbine distances

A significant increase in the minimum distance between a home and a wind power turbine would “wipe out” onshore wind projects, the Minister for Communications, Energy, and Natural Resources Alex White has said. The Minister, whose Dublin Rathdown constituency was the subject of a canvass by a group pressing people not to vote for politicians who support onshore wind energy over the weekend, said the current 500 metre “setback distance” guidelines could be made a mandatory rule. The chairman of . . . Complete story »

Apex meets with Clay County Supervisors

SPENCER – “It’s a new step, really,” summed up Clay County supervisor Barry Anderson, “when you look at Clay County.” Anderson and the other supervisors listened last week to two wind energy project developers describe a new wind farm project being proposed that originates in O’Brien County. Clay County Board Chair Linda Swanson welcomed Apex Clean Energy Senior Development Manager Brenna Gunderson and Development Manager Holly McCoy to the Board’s regular meeting. Clay County currently has one utility-scale wind turbine . . . Complete story »

Wind power as a form of “green energy” is far from green

We are climbing on the wind power bandwagon just as other countries are jumping off. As suggested by recent announcements by Premier Brad Wall and SaskPower, we are likely to see more wind farm projects in Saskatchewan in the near future. There are many reasons why wind power has fallen into disrepute. It is not the most reliable source of electricity. Turbines are only 30 per cent efficient at best and they must be taken offline in adverse weather conditions, . . . Complete story »

Henderson worried proposed Galloo Island wind farm will be “an eyesore”

An Albany energy developer is considering building a 32-turbine wind farm on Galloo Island, 6 miles offshore, on Lake Ontario. But residents in Henderson, a town on the shores of the lake, say all they’d get out of the project is a ruined view. If you’ve ever visited Henderson you know that the homes along the harbor are big and beautiful, with sweeping views of the Lake Ontario. The town itself is small and quiet. “Here we are, right here, . . . Complete story »

Ohio group moving ahead with big plans to harness Lake Erie’s wind

It’s been called the “Saudi Arabia of wind” – not an oil-soaked desert, but a breezy lake on Ontario’s American border. Now, an Ohio group is moving ahead with plans to harness Lake Erie’s strong gusts, in sharp contrast to neighbouring Ontario that slapped a moratorium on wind farms in all its Great Lakes amid a public backlash to the spectre of the highrise-sized turbines along its shorelines. The Icebreaker, as it’s been dubbed, will be a small demonstration project with . . . Complete story »

Windfarm bid rejected over red kite concerns

Plans for a huge 27-turbine windfarm at the side of the main road between Aberystwyth and Llangurig have been turned down over concerns that red kites could “collide with the blades” and be “electrocuted” on the gridlines. The proposed 27-turbine development at the Sweet Lamb Rally complex in Y Foel was formally submitted to The Planning Inspectorate for consideration in July last year by Mynydd y Gwynt Ltd. The decision by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change . . . Complete story »

Judge gives go ahead for wind turbine in West Devon

The go-ahead has been given by one of the country’s top judges for a wind turbine to be erected in the middle of the west Devon countryside despite claims that it will be a blot on the landscape and harm the setting of an ancient monument and two listed buildings. On Friday (27 November 2015) Mr Justice Lindblom dismissed a challenge to the scheme from the owner of land adjoining the farm where the site earmarked for the turbine is . . . Complete story »

‘They don’t have all their ducks in a row’

GREENWICH – A developer of wind energy said Tuesday she’s excited to begin construction of a wind turbine park in rural Greenwich and looks forward to the project generating money for the community. But Jensen is way ahead of herself, according to an attorney for a group of rural Greenwich residents opposed to the project. “They don’t have all their ducks in a row,” said the attorney, Sam Randazzo of the Columbus-area firm McNees Wallace & Nurick. He represents the group . . . Complete story »
