A series of public meetings have been arranged to fight plans for a wind farm in the Upper Swansea Valley.
Campaigners say that the development, planned for Varteg mountain, overlooking Ystalyfera, would be detrimental to the surrounding area in a number of ways.
Top of the list of concerns is the visual impact of the 4 turbines, which would stand 115m, while residents in the communities of Godrergraig, Ystalyfera and Ystradgynlais are also concerned over the flicker shadows the blades would cause, falling house values and the possibility of the development making the mountain unstable.
A spokesman for TEGWCH Residents Association, which has been formed to fight the plans which have been submitted to Neath Port Talbot and Powys Councils, said: “The A4067 running up the valley is sued by a considerable number of tourists making their way from the Gower to the Brecon Beacons National Park.
“The mountain itself is noted as being geologically unstable, which has been exacerbated by the many mines that have worked the mountain over the past two centuries.”
One concerned resident said: “As far as I can see, apart from one job, the turbines won’t provide the community with any benefits”
No one from the applicant, Ystalyfera Wind Energy Ltd, was at the meeting in Godrergraig.
A further meeting will take place in Ystalyfera Community Hall tonight at 7pm.
