Moore: Energy company outspends anti-ordinance group

The Chicago-based wind energy firm had a huge budget compared to local citizens when it came to promoting their side of the dispute about wind energy zoning ordinances.

Invenergy donated $161,007 to the Sanilac Coalition for Wind and Jobs compared to the $2,551.57 budget the Concerned Citizens of Argyle and Moore Township used to spread their word.

The pro-wind ordinance coalition spent the money on lawn signs, consulting fees, mailing, phone expenses, printing, legal fees, meals, travel, research, a study, advertising, postage, rent, and office supplies.

The anti-wind ordinance Concerned Citizens spent their money on signs, lumber and fasteners, postage, flyers, printed material, hall rental, and radio ads. Four local citizens donated in-kind goods to the campaign.

These pre-election campaign finance reports were due Oct. 23 at the Sanilac County Clerk’s Office.

Moore Township voters will go to the polls Nov. 3 to decide whether to approve the wind energy zoning ordinance adopted this year.

Argyle Township voters will not vote until next May.

The Concerned Citizens group takes issue with the setback distances from property without turbines set by the Moore Township Board, which are shorter than those approved by the planning commission.
