It is important to add another dimension to Brian Dubie’s (Reformer, October 14) noise-related concern over wind turbines as a source of energy. These ostensibly “green” alternatives to fossil or uranium fuels as generators of energy are meant to ameliorate our ever-increasing demand for electricity. However, wind turbines are simply disastrous to the well-being of both the bats and birds with which we perforce share the biosphere. Indeed, our presently existing wind turbines are conservatively estimated to now each year kill at least 880,000 bats and 570,000 birds. These deaths, of course, add to the several serious bat and bird declines currently being experienced from other largely anthropogenic causes.
