Educational meeting on wind energy set for Thursday

An educational meeting will be held Thursday to help people decide whether they’re interested in pursuing wind power as an alternative source of energy.

Rebecca Rush, an outreach coordinator for the Maryland Energy Administration, said the local discussion will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at Hagerstown Community College’s Merle S. Elliott Continuing Education Center.

“This is outreach to the public,” she said of the free meeting.

Rush said one of many advantages of wind power is that the energy isn’t transferred to a commercial power grid.

“The power stays local and the economic benefit would stay local,” she said.

Rush said few wind turbines are operational in Washington County.

HCC and Washington County Technical High School each have a small turbine. She said those turbines are used as educational tools and produce small amounts of electricity for both schools.

“It helps reduce their electric bills,” she said.

Rush said MEA is hosting the event.

Wind power can produce energy for community facilities, educational institutions and local businesses, according to a news release from the Washington County Department of Public Relations and Community Affairs.

Local businesses, academic institutions, residents, utilities and project developers are invited to attend the event.
