Police’s 145ft wind turbine would ruin views, says MP

North Somerset MP Liam Fox believes a wind turbine built by Avon and Somerset Constabulary would be a ‘blight’ on the Gordano Valley.

As reported this week by the Times, the police force wants to install a 145ft turbine near is headquarters in Portishead.

But critics believe building it off Valley Road will ruin the tranquillity of Merlin Park and views from across the valley.

As part of the planning process people can submit comments for and against the proposal, and North Somerset MP Dr Fox was the first to register his concerns about the ‘intrusive’ scheme.

He said: “The elevation of the Avon and Somerset police HQ in Portishead makes it virtually inevitable this will be a visual intrusion in one of the most picturesque parts of North Somerset and will effectively blight the view from the Gordano Valley.”

Avon and Somerset Constabulary says the wind turbine would save it money at a time of significant budget cuts and help the environment.

North Somerset Council however will decide whether to grant the scheme planning permission or not.

In an online poll, about 90 per cent of Times readers said they did not want the turbine to get the green light.
