Proposed wind turbine will ‘blight people’s lives’

Cambrian News | 05 October 2015 | www.cambrian-news.co.uk

Plans for a controversial Cardigan wind turbine which has split a community have been submitted to Ceredigion County Council.

Cardigan Community Energy, part of the Awel Deg/Fair Wind co-operative, has submitted a full planning application for the community wind turbine project at Oernant, just north of the town.

The plan is to set up a 500kw turbine, with a height to hub of 45m and 67m to blade tip, on land owned by farmer Richard Jones.

Income from the project would be used to fund local schemes such as installing solar panels on halls, schools, swimming pools and other community buildings.

But opponents to the scheme say residents’ lives could be blighted by a “monstrous construction on their doorstep”.

Objectors last month urged town councillors to oppose the application saying it would “dominate the environment in Cardigan”.

But the plan is being backed by community organisations, including Cardigan Swimming Pool and Jig-So Children’s Centre.
