Selectmen vote to temporarily stop turbine operation

Selectmen Vote To Temporary Stop Turbine Operation | By RYAN BRAY | The Enterprise | September 29, 2015 | www.capenews.net

Selectmen voted to temporarily halt operation of the first of the town’s two wind turbines Monday night, September 28.

According to a press release from town manager Julian M. Suso, selectmen voted during closed executive session to stop the turbine to comply with a cease-and-desist order that was issued by the zoning board of appeals on September 23. At the same time, selectmen also voted to appeal the appeals board’s cease-and-desist decision, the press release said.

Both turbines were constructed in 2009, but abutters have raised issue regarding the potential health impacts that can arise as a result of their operation near their property. The Massachusetts Court of Appeals ruled in February that the first turbine, Wind 1, began operations despite not having a special permit necessary to run.

A Special Town Meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 10, in which articles relevant to the operation of Wind 1 will be put to a vote.

Selectmen chairman Douglas H. Jones said one article will pertain to the town’s turbine bylaw, while another will concern the loss of revenue that will come from Wind 1’s temporary shutdown. Selectmen are scheduled to continue discussion of both articles at a meeting Tuesday, September 29, at the Falmouth Public Library at 7 PM.
