Costly options for Rim’s wind turbines

Once touted as a green energy tool to use in teaching students about physical science and renewable resources, Rim of the World High School’s four wind turbines remain a costly problem for the school district with no easy solution in sight.

The problem rests with the steel poles that support the vertical axis wind turbines and the welds that support the mounting platforms. At the Sept. 17 school board meeting, it was confirmed that to get state certification Rim would have to prove the poles and welds meet state safety requirements. To do that the district would have to spend anywhere from $30,000 to more than $40,000.
