Villagers win fight against 77m high turbine

Villagers near Selby have fought off a wind farm plan which could have put a 77-metre high turbine near their homes.

Councillors on Selby District Council’s planning committee turned down the application by H Hey and Sons to construct a 77m high turbine on farmland, capable of generating 500kW of power.

Although planners had recommended the scheme for approval, almost 70 letters of objection were received from local residents and the parish councils in Balne, Heck and Great Eggborough all objected to it while the district councillor Debbie White, a parish council representative, and another local resident all spoke at the planning meeting to object.

After the decision, Selby and Ainsty MP Nigel Adams said: “Selby councillors have recognised the importance of the Written Ministerial Statement and reached the right decision, it is no longer acceptable for large wind turbines to be imposed on small communities.

he targets for onshore wind energy capacity have been met and that is why the subsidies are being cut and why valid planning concerns raised by local communities must be given greater weight when making planning decisions.”

Campaigner Laura Watkinson added: “We, the local community, are absolutely delighted that Selby Planning Committee have listened to us and are genuinely concerned for us and have voted against this wind turbine.”
