Letter: A word of thanks to Duke Energy

Public sentiment seems to be running against Duke Energy and its plans to continue providing WNC with reliable energy at a reasonable cost for the foreseeable future. The Sierra Club, though having many positive initiatives over the years, is questioning Duke and its motives. They would prefer energy to come from renewable resources (Sept. 6 guest column). I presume they mean solar and wind farms. Where would these farms be located? Whose property will the necessary transmission and distribution lines cross? What will the reliability and cost factors be? By the way, Duke will be installing a solar farm on their property along with the new gas plant. We should instead be thanking Duke (and their predecessor companies) for excellent service over the decades. They invested millions on scrubbers at the Lake Julian plant that significantly reduced pollution. They also were addressing the coal ash problem before it became a political issue and probably would have switched to natural gas before but cannot until PSNC upgrades its facilities to provide sufficient natural gas to the mountains. So, thank you Duke. Maybe over the next 30 years advances in technology will provide us with renewable energy reliably and at a reasonable cost.
