County votes against wind turbines

In recent months, the county commissioner meetings have been a crowded affair, with many local and county residents attending in hope of voicing their opinion regarding wind turbines.

Those against the project moving forward have grown in numbers and attended a number of APC, BZA and commissioner meeting in recent months voicing reasons and concerns as to why they do not want multiple 600-foot wind turbines becoming a part of the Rush County landscape.

Tuesday’s county commissioner meeting was no exception had a standing, crowded room of residents in attendance. Wind turbines again dominated the citizen comment portion of the meeting.

Present were Senior Project Developer from Apex Rob Propes and local Apex representative Michael Dora.

Following a number of speakers, Propes took the podium to clarify a number of points and concerns raised by citizens. He was followed by additional comments from citizens opposed to the project.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., northern district commissioner Paul Wilkinson made a motion to stop all discussion with Apex regarding the Flatrock Wind project.

The county leaders then took a brief recess to discuss the legality of the motion. After reconvening, the motion was seconded by commissioner Mark Bacon and passed unanimously with all three county leaders voting to sever all communication and negotiations regarding the proposed project with Apex.

It is important to note that the county had not entered into any formal agreement nor signed any binding contract(s) with Apex.

As a result of Tuesday’s decision, it is unknown as to where the sides will find common ground regarding the judicial review filed by Apex Clean Air Energy following the July 1 Rush County Board of Zoning Appeals adjustment to setbacks.
