Energy firm seeks approval for wind turbine project near Brooklyn

A Dartmouth-based energy firm is seeking the province’s approval for a wind turbine project in Queens County.

Liverpool Wind Energy Storage Project Inc., a special purpose entity created by Watts Wind Energy Inc. and Unify Energy Inc., filed its Liverpool Wind Farm for an environmental assessment on Tuesday.

The company’s plan calls for two Enercon-92 wind turbines, producing a total of 4.7 megawatts, to be erected about four kilometres outside Brooklyn.

“This project is the first wind energy facility to be associated with a regenerative air energy storage system,” the company said in its submission to the province.

If approved, this system would be the “first grid interconnected energy storage system in Nova Scotia.”

Construction is expected to begin in March 2016 and the turbines are expected to be online in October 2016.

Nova Scotia’s Environment Minister will render a decision on or before Oct. 28.
