Swanton Wind notifies towns of plan to construct up to 7 turbines

The developers of a proposed wind power project in Swanton have formally notified 10 communities of plans to construct up to seven wind turbines.

Swanton Wind developer Travis Belisle sent a letter to regional planners and local officials last week saying he will file for a certificate of public good from state regulators in October.

Martha Staskus is with VERA Renewables, which is consulting on the project.

She says developers hope to hear from officials and the public at an informational meeting next week, on Sept. 10. “There’s a lot of local information that’s very valuable and our folks need to hear that information to be able to be sure we include it in the overall plan of the project,” she said.

Some project neighbors have already expressed concerns, but Staskus believes the overall impact of the project will be positive.

“We think that it’s economically viable, we think that it will not harm the environment, we do not think that it will create an undue adverse impact on the aesthetic quality of the region. This is a real working landscape,” she said.

Once Swanton Wind files for a Certificate of Public Good, the Public Service Board will also hold hearings.
