Hants County wind farm project seeks environmental OK

A Dartmouth-based energy developer and its partners are seeking provincial environmental approval for a Hants County wind farm.

Scotian WindFields Inc. filed the Hardwood Lands wind project for a provincial environmental assessment on Tuesday. The three-turbine venture also involves Scotian Wind Inc., SWEB Development Inc. and WEB Wind Energy North America Inc.

The six-megawatt project is located on privately owned land about seven kilometres northeast of Nine Mile River, in the Municipality of East Hants.

Environment Minister Randy Delorey has until Oct. 21 to rule on the turbine plan. The wind farm isn’t expected to have a significant impact on the environment, says a report prepared for the project by Strum Consulting.

If the wind farm is approved, construction would start next spring. Turbines are slated to be operational in the summer.

The project is being developed under the province’s community feed-in tariff program, which encouraged local ownership of small renewable energy projects. The Liberal government recently cancelled COMFIT, saying the program would have an impact on power rates if it continued, and it is closed to new projects.
