What is the rest of the story?

LETTER: What is the rest of the story? | Sioux City Journal | siouxcityjournal.com

Your recent story on the positive impact on local businesses in O’Brien County because of the construction of hundreds of wind turbines was typical feel-good journalism promoting economic development. What (in the immortal words of Paul Harvey) is the rest of the story?

What about the millions of taxpayers watching their hard-earned tax dollars disappearing down the proverbial rat hole because wind is completely unsustainable and unreliable. It doesn’t blow 30 mph 24/7.

Here are some facts the wind industry doesn’t want advertised. 1. Wind will never replace any fossil fuel plant because all must be kept on standby ready to generate electricity because electricity can’t be stored when the wind stops. 2. The amount of fossil fuel energy consumed by the infrastructure construction (turbines and transmission lines) will never be recovered over the lifetime of the turbine.

The most telling fact of all is zero wind turbines will be built if government subsidies are eliminated. Almost every elected official, led by Gov. Terry Branstad and Sen. Charles Grassley, supports subsidies in the name of economic development. Is this economic development or is it just another example of suckling another government teat? The mother milk of politics is how much can I get from the government to ensure my re-election. 0 Jerry Crew, Webb, Iowa
