153-foot wind energy tower for Hanover is approved by Town Board

SILVER CREEK – A wind energy tower was approved at the Hanover Town Board meeting on Monday evening. It was the third time that board members reviewed the request for a variance to erect a 153-foot tower on Prospect Road.

“The approval of the variance has made us reconsider our local law,” said Supervisor Todd H. Johnson. He said the local law restricts the height of towers to 120 feet.

“Every request we have had in the past few years has been higher than 120 feet,” Johnson said.

“I think the technology for wind towers has changed, and there are new height and blade configurations to make them more efficient,” Johnson said.

No one from the public spoke about the proposal.

A permit for the tower must be issued by the code-enforcement officer.

In other business from the Town Board meeting, Johnson announced that although documentation on a proposed cellular phone tower was received by last Wednesday, he has not had time to review the correspondence. The matter was not on the agenda.

The request was made several weeks ago by Verizon for a placement on private land on Route 39. A variance was required due to the location of the tower as it would be less than 1,000 feet from a structure.

“We have documents that need legal review,” Johnson said. They include documents from Verizon and from an attorney representing neighbors who oppose the tower, he said.

The supervisor said he expects to place the items on a September meeting agenda.
