Llwynygroes turbine objectors heckle councillors in crunch meeting

The chair of Ceredigion council’s planning committee threatened to eject objectors to a wind turbine in the south of the county from the council chamber after they labelled members who approved the plans “corrupt”.

Cllr Rhodri Davies, leading the meeting last Wednesday, intervened after a packed gallery of objectors to a proposed 30m turbine overlooking Llangeitho heckled councillors repeatedly as a split developed between members over the plans.

Recommended for refusal by planning officers on the basis that the turbine would “create significant adverse effects on the qualities and special character of a designated Special Landscape Area”, members were told that the application had attracted over 1,000 responses – the most of any application the council had dealt with.

The application for the turbine, which was given the go-ahead to be built on land at Troed y Bryn, Llwynygroes, Tregaron, was deferred last month ahead of a Site Inspection Panel, which met on 28 July.

An hour-long discussion over the proposals produced a split vote with seven councillors voting to push through the plans, six against and there was one abstention.

The announcement of the result brought boos from the gallery with shouts of “disgusting” and “corrupt” from disgruntled objectors.
