Renewable energy company receives an earful from Essex County residents opposing another wind farm

Essex County residents say more wind turbines would be an eyesore | CTV Windsor | Published Thursday, August 13, 2015 | windsor.ctvnews.ca

G.D.F Suez wants to erect dozens of wind turbines in Essex and was hoping to receive public approval at its first, of two, public meetings Wednesday night.

The Blue Sky Project would stretch across a large area from Tecumseh to Essex.

Company spokesperson, Bonnie Hiltz says the project would provide up to 60-megawatts of power. The project will have four years to be developed so we’ll start at that stage with the studies and project developments and hoping to reach commercial operation in the next four years”.

If approved the wind turbines would be located in Essex and the facilities that would run the turbines would be in Tecumseh.

However, one Tecumseh resident, Mike Lutsch does not favour the project. “Essex and other municipalities in the area have voted not to accept any more turbines in their areas and I’d like to see Tecumseh do the same thing”.

However supporters of the project point out there would be 100 construction jobs at the peak of construction, followed by four to five permanent jobs with the facility and the operation would pay municipal taxes.

Still some residents say the aesthetics would be ruined, outweighing the benefits.

The company is still seeking approval and should know by the end of the year.

One more meeting is scheduled at the McGregor Community Centre, 9571 Walker Road, Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m..
