Fears Swaffham is becoming a ‘turbine ghetto’

Fears that Swaffham was turning into a “turbine ghetto” were expressed as a scheme to build two new structures on the outskirts of the town were discussed.

Airvolution Energy Limited’s amendment to its scheme to build two wind turbines on Sporle Road was discussed by Swaffham Town Council this evening.

The developer has reduced the proposed height from 131 to 115 metres. The majority of the councillors were in favour of the proposals but Terry Jennison said she was “totally against” the scheme.

She said: “It won’t be long before they apply to put a turbine on the Butter Cross. This is adding to the turbine ghetto.”

Under the revised proposals, the proposed wind turbines would be lower than Sporle Road’s existing Swaffham II turbine, which stands at 120 metres.

Airvolution’s project managers said they decided to reduce the size a result of feedback from the community and statutory bodies.

The amendment has been lodged with Breckland District Council. The application is likely to be determined this autumn.
