Wind turbines again discussed at commissioner meeting

A trend for a number of Rush County Commissioner meetings had been open discussion regarding wind turbines. Monday’s meeting was no exception. After handling necessary business from various county department heads, the county leaders asked those in attendance for public comment or questions.

Rob Propes, Senior Development Manager for APEX, attended the meeting and answered a number of questions from residents and the county leaders.

One question centered on the amount of Rush County taxpayer dollars that will be incurred as legal fees during the current legal matter.

According to county attorney Leigh Morning, that total is unknown at this time and no timetable has been given for the litigation process.

“I know that a special judge was or will be chosen to hear the matter,” Morning said.

A resident then asked if the county is currently in negotiation with APEX even though there is a suit against the county by the company. The answer was affirmative. Rush County is still in negotiation with the wind turbine company and according to Morning, that is not an uncommon practice.

A number of questions centered on the size and manufacturer of the turbines that, if approved, would be placed in Rush and surrounding counties.

Propes said that APEX is currently in contact with two companies that would provide the gear work and turbines; however at this time from a business prospective, he is unable to provide the make or manufacturer of the wind turbines.

When asked about the data and information relayed during a July public meeting on the wind turbines while APEX had not yet chosen a supplier to provide the turbines, Propes said that the information was gained by using data from machines larger than those proposed for Rush County.
