County wind project gets green light

Prince Edward County Mayor Robert Quaiff is says he’s shocked and dismayed that a developer has been given the thumbs up to build a wind farm in South Marysburgh and Athol wards.

Today, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Charge announced it issued Renewable Energy Approval for WPD White Pines to construct a 59 megawatt wind facility comprising 27 of 29 proposed wind turbines. The project known as White Pines has been in the works for five years.

Mayor Quaiff says right from the onset they have told the provincial government they are an unwilling host for a number of reasons including economics and endangered species to no avail.

Like the Gilead project proposed for Ostrander Point, White Pines is no stranger controversy and public protest.

White Pines pitted neighbour against neighbour powering a $14 million civil lawsuit in August 2012. The suit was later dropped and a judicial review sparked by Elizabeth Driver and Edwin Rowse soon followed.

Moving forward, Manager of Communications at WPD Kevin Surette says a construction date hasn’t been set yet.
