Hartland awaiting more info on small wind turbines

HARTLAND— Hartland officials are still waiting on firmer details from United Wind Company concerning two intermediate wind turbines, the Town Board informed the public Thursday.

The turbines would be similar to those in Royalton, however, they would be built on a grid structure without guide wires. They will stand under 150 feet and will be placed at the Hartland highway garage on Ridge Road.

The energy produced from the two turbines would power 97 percent of the town’s property, but would not include the Fire Hall.

The Town Board is looking at costs, however no decisions have been made.

“There is nothing more going on except for that we are continuing to wait for more information moving forward,” Supervisor Ross Annable said.

The board said it hopes to keep the project open to the public in order to ensure transparency and to eliminate any misunderstandings about the turbines.

Annable has said the turbines will be nothing like the proposed wind turbine project that is an issue in the town of Somerset.

A decision as to whether Hartland officials wish to move into an agreement with United Wind must be made by October. Annable is sure that a decision will tentatively be made by September.

The idea for the turbines was brought to the board by board member F. David Snyder after he did some research and found that working with New York State Energy research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) would help reduce Hartland’s energy costs.

Additional energy saving ideas – such as solar panels – have been looked at, but the board found that solar energy did not provide as much of a savings for the town of Hartland as the wind turbines could. Solid numbers have not been drawn up yet, but will be presented to the public shortly, officials said.
