NextEra granted wind information towers in southern Stark County

At their regular meeting Tuesday, Stark County commissioners approved conditional use permits for two tracts of land in the southern part of the county for wind farm company NextEra Energy Resources to erect two information towers.

The 197-foot temporary towers will each sit on separate 2.5-acre plots along the county’s southern border. Their purpose is to gather wind data for up to five-and-a-half years as NextEra scans the area as a possible business venture.

The decision follows the county Planning and Zoning Board’s unanimous vote to make a recommendation to approve the permit.

Commissioner Ken Zander gave a sole “no” vote to both the permits, saying afterward that he was representing county residents opposed to the activity who felt their voices were being left out of county decisions.
