Plan commission considers wind turbine

Eau Claire – A wind turbine could be going up on the city’s west side.

The plan commission will discuss a site plan for a wind turbine for Chippewa Valley Technical College’s Education Center, which is on their west campus.

CVTC said the turbine will produce enough energy to power an average home in the United States. Besides being used for teaching purposes, CVTC said the turbine will also provide data about the feasibility of wind energy being used in the Eau Claire area.

“It’s found throughout the Midwest on farms, and so it’s likely to be the most relevant technology,” Aliesha Krowe, the project manager at the Energy Education Center, said. “It’s about 100 feet high, so it fits within the landscape of our energy education center, and we hope it will make a great training tool for our students.”

CVTC has been working with Xcel Energy and Chippewa Valley Regional Airport to make sure the wind turbine complies with FAA requirements and the training district’s needs. The commission meeting is scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m.
