Berry Fen wind turbine plans withdrawn today

Ely News | June 25, 2015 | www.cambridge-news.co.uk

Contentious plans to erect three wind turbines on the outskirts of Ely have been withdrawn today (Thursday).

A spokesman for East Cambridgeshire District Council has confirmed that REG Windpower have withdrawn their application to put up turbines on land at Berry Fen – land in between Haddenham and Aldreth.

A decision on the proposals was due to be made at the district council’s planning committee on Wednesday, July 1.

The firm submitted its plans last June and just weeks later the Stop Berry Fen Wind Farm (SBFWF) group was launched by an army of concerned residents.

The plan was to originally erect four turbines, but in a bid to win over campaigners, the firm reduced the number of turbines to three – and reduced the proposed height of each turbine from 130m to their tip to 125m instead.

But protestors said the turbines would “destroy the peace and tranquility” of the area, “wreak havoc” on local wildlife and have a detrimental impact on local property prices, to name just a few.

More than 600 people had commented on the proposals since they were submitted.

591 of the comments were objections and 15 were in support of the scheme.

Nobody from REG Windpower was available to comment today (Thursday).
