Can someone please quiet the noisy turbine?

Sandusky Register | Jun 22, 2015 | www.sanduskyregister.com

I am all for being green, but why is the windmill behind City Hall in Sandusky so loud and in so close proximity to gas tanks? Who approved the permits for this? Aren’t there restrictions on these? —Greg on Meigs Street

Sandusky ex officio mayor Dennis Murray Jr. and city manager Eric Wobser provided these answers:

Murray: I don’t have any other firm information about this.  I cannot quite recall the timing, but it may be that this was erected before the city adopted it wind turbine code. My recollection is that we began working on the code as a result of this particular turbine. I see that the code addresses setbacks and noise levels. I do not know if these would have impacted this installation but suspect that the setback requirement might have impact the location.

Wobser: (Various city staff members) looked into this, and the restrictions in place were not in place at the time of the construction of the facility. Please see attached codified ordinance 1153 dealing with wind energy conservation systems adopted in 2009. This did not govern construction of the windmill, which was installed before passage of the ordinance. Planning is still evaluating whether or not it is in violation of any existing noise ordinances.
