Torridge MP welcomes a halt to the march of wind turbines

North Devon Gazette | 20 June 2015 | www.northdevongazette.co.uk

Torridge MP Geoffrey Cox has welcomed an end to subsidies for onshore wind turbines.

The MP, who has long campaigned against the ‘proliferation’ of large numbers of turbines, was one of those who wrote to the Prime Minister in 2013 urging him to end the subsidy.

Under the new rules, financial subsidies will stop in April next year for all schemes that had not received planning permission and a national grid connection by Thursday, June 18 this year.

“This announcement will produce an enormous sigh of relief throughout Torridge and West Devon,” said Mr Cox.

“We already have too many of these machines littering the countryside but with this change and the new planning arrangements, I hope and believe that we have finally won the battle to stop them.”

Under the new Energy Bill, developers will also have to demonstrate their proposals have community backing and provision is made in the local plan.
