North Cornwall MP backs Tory plan to end wind turbine subsidies

MP Scott Mann has backed Conservative plans to give people in North Cornwall new powers to oppose wind farms.

The MP for North Cornwall has welcomed the announcement that the Government wants to end public subsidies for onshore wind projects, while giving priority to the protection of the landscape.

Wind turbines will only get the go-ahead if the local community has made it clear they support onshore wind projects in their area.

They will be free to decide where turbines should go and any proposals must address the concerns of local people and have their backing.

M Mann said: “Too long have our communities been powerless to stop wind farm developments that they objected to. It is time we utilise other forms of renewable energy, such as geothermal and tidal, which offer much more consistent sources of energy for our growing population.

“As much I and many other people are keen to harness renewable energy, it is time we stopped industrialising our beautiful countryside. I agree that we must strive to clean up our planet, but at the same time, we must not squander the very environment that we are trying to save”.

He added: “Cornwall has its fair share of wind turbines now and has rightly contributed to the UK’s efforts to make clean energy. Now is the time we stop obstructing Cornwall’s beauty that attracts so many visitors every year”.
