Flooding at windfarm cable tunnel

Leinster Express | 12/06/15 | www.leinsterexpress.ie

The ESB have done nothing about a overflowing manhole which carries power from the Gortahile Wind Farm, despite being notified about the problem almost six months ago.

Cllr Ben Brennan said the manhole has been flooding for along time and before the Barrow Floods, Lambert Hygiene in Monure, which is opposite the manhole is flooded.

Raymond James, acting senior engineer said this is one of the numerous inspection chambers which have been built on the underground power lines which carries electricity from the Gorthaile wind farm to the ESB substation in Graiguecullen.

“It would appear that surface water is entering the duct lines from the higher ground and escapes out through this chamber at Lambert Hygiene Services which is located at a lower level,” Mr James said.

He said the ESB was responsible for the chamber and had been advised of the overflowing issue last January.

Mr James continued: “They agreed that they would examine the problem and have it resolved. To date no action has been taken. We contacted the ESB again last week and we are waiting on a response from them.”

He said the council would continue to contact the ESB until they got a satisfactory outcome.
