Opposition grows to Macritch Hill windfarm

Campaigners have welcomed Angus Council’s official objection to a major glens windfarm plan.

Councillors agreed with a recommendation from the authority’s head of planning, Vivien Smith, that the Macritch Hill proposal in Glen Isla “would give rise to significant and adverse landscape and visual impacts and also to significant and adverse cumulative landscape and visual impacts”.

However, Councillor Bob Myles said he felt the official report was “biased” towards the negative impacts of the proposed windfarm.

Developer Eneco UK 
submitted an application for 18 125m turbines between Glen Prosen and Glen Isla to the Scottish government in January.

Eneco say the energy produced could supply Scottish Water with up to a third of their annual energy consumption.

The site is approximately six miles north west of Kirriemuir and close to the Backwater reservoir.

Ray Gibson, of Angus Community Windfarm Action Group, said: “The majority of residents support renewable energy and Scottish Water’s attempt to reduce its energy bills should be commended.

“However, Scottish ministers have made it clear that windfarms should only be built in suitable locations – Backwater Reservoir is clearly not one of them.”
