Mount Emerald wind farm opponents to attend Senate committee hearing in Cairns

By Renee Cluff | ABC News | 18 May 2015 | www.abc.net.au

A Senate committee examining the impacts of wind turbines is in Cairns, in far north Queensland, today, for a public hearing.

The committee decided to come to Cairns after receiving several submissions from people concerned about the proposed Mount Emerald wind farm on the Atherton Tablelands.

Residents opposed to the project will attend today’s hearing, along with its proponents, RATCH Australia.

The 63-turbine wind farm received the green light from the State Government last month but is still awaiting federal approval.

The Senate committee is examining whether current regulations governing turbines are sufficient and is also looking at their economic and health impacts.

Its findings will be handed down in August.
