Pendleton board approves windmills

PENDLETON – The Pendleton Town Board approved an amendment to the town code Monday which will allow private residents to place wind energy conversion systems on their properties within certain limitations.

The ordinance will not apply to wind energy conversion systems intended for commercial use.

Residential property must be at least five acres in size to have a windmill. Windmills must be placed in the backyard of the property and be more than 500 feet away from any neighboring house.

Any windmill must also be placed at least one-and-a-half times its own height from any building on the owner’s property. Power capacity for any windmill is limited to 10 kilowatts. A height limit of 120 feet is in place according to the ordinance.

Windmills must be made unclimbable as well as a distance away from power lines.

A public hearing was held before the board passed the ordinance at Monday’s meeting. No comments were made by the public.

Windmills will need to adhere to the town’s planned noise ordinance, which the town planning board is drafting.
