Wind turbine plan near church halted

Lynn News | 28 April 2015 | www.lynnnews.co.uk

Plans to build a 78 metre wind turbine close to a village church have been rejected by councillors.

Developers had sought permission for the scheme at Manor Farm, Sculthorpe, on land close to the parish church.

But members of North Norfolk District Council’s development committee followed officers’ recommendations to turn down the application during a meeting in Cromer on Thursday.

Applicants Cranmer, on behalf of Ogden Renewable Energy, were proposing to link the turbine, which would have a 49 metre high base and a maximum blade tip height of 78 metres, to a nearby sub-station.

Although officers said it was estimated the turbine could provide electricty for up to 200 homes, their report to the committee said thebenefits of the proposal had not been clearly set out.

But more than 60 people, together with the parish council, objected to the plan.

The parish authority said the blades would be three and a half times the height of the church and argued the scheme was “unacceptable” in a heritage area.

Concerns were also raised over the potential impact on aircraft using the nearby Sculthorpe airfield.
