Clarence says no to wind turbine

Wind turbines are allowed in some parts of Clarence but not all parts.

Residents cheered the unanimous decision Monday night by the Clarence Zoning Board to deny a request by owners of Thompson Brothers Greenhouse, who wanted to put up a 133 foot wind turbine like this one that was allowed to go up on a more rural road in Clarence.

The greenhouse is right across the road from a new patio home community whose residents wanted no part of it.

“If we’re going to have to put up with a humm, or a buzz, any kind of noise, that’s going to be terribly upsetting to all of us” said nearby resident Mary Langan.

Clarence resident Lisa Haney says “They sold huge amounts of property to create neighborhoods and now they’re gonna complain because we want it to remain nice.”

Zoning Board member Ryan Mills explained why the Board would not make an exception to the 60 foot height limit in the Town. “I think the evidence and testimony illustrates this request will produce an undesirable change in the quality of the neighborhood and a detriment to nearby properties.”

Thompson Brothers Greenhosue co-owner Dawn trippie was disappointed but not surprised.”The Board was bullied by publicoutcry. Bottom line is there’s agriculture law that was involved here and they were just bullied by a lot of residents.”

Trippie believes the NY State Department of Agriculture is on her side and may challenge to Town on this issue.
