EBRPD to consider asking wind permit to be rescinded

The Independent | April 16, 2016 | www.independentnews.com

The East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) Board will consider a resolution asking the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to rescind its extension of a windfarm permit.

The issue is scheduled for the board’s April 21 agenda.

The Board of Supervisors approved extending Altamont Wind Inc. (AWI) operating permit for 828 old wind turbines in the Altamont until 2018. The vote was 3 to 2.

AWI was supposed to end the old turbines later this year, and start repowering with new turbines. The new turbines would produce more power overall and kill fewer endangered bird species. AWI had agreed in 2013 to make the change.

A representative from the state Attorney General’s office, which has been involved with the Altamont since a major agreement in 2005, said that she “strongly encouraged” the supervisors not to extend the permit.

Environmentalists are urging those opposed to the permit extension to let the Board of Supervisors know how they feel.
