With regard to the proposed Hallam wind farm, I have been doing some serious research and have learned a lot about wind farms and wind power (“County working group to draft wind farm regulations,” Feb. 25). Wind turbines are inefficient and expensive. The supplemental “income” to farms is not worth the price landowners and neighbors must pay. As we are forced to move away from traditional power sources to “green” energy, the utility customers will pay the price. Electricity bills will rise sharply as coal plants are closed and wind and solar power are increased.
The bigger goal beyond reducing pollution is reducing carbon dioxide. By 2020, an average household’s energy bill will increase by nearly $700 per year, yet the Clean Power Plan may reduce global temperatures by only two-hundredths of a degree Celsius. In Germany, electricity prices have risen 60 percent as renewable energy has been increasingly promoted. Wind doesn’t supply the steady power needed for a stable grid, and turbines actually produce only a percentage, often under 25 percent, of capacity. Germany is turning back to coal.
I believe wind farms hurt more than help our environment. Wildlife is also at risk, and wind turbines pose many health risks that I am not OK with facing. Property values are adversely affected, and high electric bills will most affect the poorest. The number of farmers in the Hallam areas does not outnumber concerned acreage owners. As an acreage owner 3 miles north of Cortland, for these and many other reasons, I am totally opposed to putting a wind farm here. It’s just not worth it.
