Residents opposed to wind turbines confirm their stand

West Elgin Residents Opposing Wind Turbines, made their position clear to West Elgin council last week, reminding them are still prepared to oppose them in the municipality.

The update on their activities, presented by Mac Ford, vice chairman of the group, reminded council of the long list of reasons residents belonging to the group don’t want them in West Elgin.

It was in September 2013 when the municipality and residents confirmed they were opposed to industrial wind turbines.

Residents formed a group opposing them and the municipality passed a resolution declaring itself a non-willing host to turbines.

Ford said economically, wind turbines are arriving at a time when there is a surplus of electricity in Ontario. Add to that wind turbines are regarded as not efficient when it comes to generating power.

“We cannot afford this wind experiment,” Ford said. “About 80% of wind power is surplus.”

Ford said every wind turbine takes up approximately three acres of land.

Turbines are considered not friendly to the environment. Ford said. They contribute to the death of bats and birds and in West Elgin, could be a hazard to the bald eagle population.

Ford said he dreaded the thought of turbines around his home where bald eagles have now re-established themselves.

Wind turbines coming here are not seen as an incentive for anyone wanting to move into the future Seaside housing development.

Ford said the turbines will not help bring people to Port Glasgow where the Seaside housing development is planned

Ford said the turbines are linked to feelings of annoyance from residents and a general loss health.

Coun. Richard Leatham joined Dep. Mayor Mary Bodnar in re-affirming

their opposition to wind turbines in West Elgin.

The presentation by residents opposed to wind turbines came on the same day as one by RES Canada, who have negotiated leases with farmers to locate turbines and are supported by the Glasgow Shores Renewable Energy Co-Op.
