Wind farm Senate committee hearing in Portland to consider regulations, economic impact

A Senate committee will hold its first public hearing today in Portland, in south-west Victoria, to examine the regulatory governance and economic impact of wind farms.

The committee has called for submissions from key stakeholders across Australia.

Chairman Senator John Madigan said there had been health concerns from people living close to turbines and the hearing was a chance for people to share their experiences.

“It’s important to give people an opportunity to come and express their opinion,” he said.

“My goal and that of the committee is to get to the truth.”

Ararat Rural City Council will give evidence relating to the economic benefits of the industry.

Mayor Paul Hooper said he was concerned with the negativity around wind farms.

“We need to bring balance to the argument and that’s all I intend to do,” he said.

There is beneficiaries to wind farms and it’s not all bad news.”

The committee is due to hand down its report by June 24.
