Leaders, residents strike deal on Kinangop power project

Nyandarua leaders have finally struck a deal with residents of Kinangop, allowing for the demarcation of land set aside for the establishment of a wind-power farm.

During a meeting held at Mwendandu Market in Magumu Ward and attended by hundreds of residents, it was agreed that surveyors move to demarcate the land earmarked for the Sh13 billion project beginning Monday.

Led by Governor Daniel Waithaka Mwangi, the leaders urged locals to support the Jubilee administration’s initiative.

“The people of Nyandarua who voted for President Uhuru Kenyatta should not appear to be fighting this project,” declared the governor.

At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that surveyors be allowed to move on the site to start the demarcation.

They also agreed that families whose land will be leased to put up turbines are adequately compensated.

This includes a Sh2.5 million pay-out in advance for the pieces of land where turbines will be erected, and a further compensation by 30 per cent value of land for neighbours who live some 180 meters from the turbines.

It was also resolved that farmers maintain peace and that President Kenyatta be invited to visit the area as the project is implemented.
