€50,000 needed to oppose wind farm plans! Huge turnout at public meeting

Opposition to a planned €200 [million] wind farm in east Donegal is growing – but concerned residents may have to raise in the region of €50,000 to fight their case.

Cork firm Planree Limited has lodged plans with An Bord Pleanala under a fast-tracking planning process to erect up to 49 giant turbines over a 15km stretch of the Finn Valley, from near the Barnesmore Gap to south-east of Killygordon.

Over 250 people attended a public meeting in Crossroads, Killygordon, last night to discuss the issue.

Concerns were expressed about several issues, ranging from health fears to the visual impact, traffic and the safety of turbines.

There was united opposition to the proposals with support for a group objection backed by experts.

Many people in the area have been shocked to learn that even though there may be considerable opposition, they will have to contest and win their case at An Bord Pleanala level to stop the project from going ahead.

As meeting co-ordinator George Sproule told those in attendance: “You have to spend to defend.”

The deadline for objections is March 27th.
