Wind Industry Reform Victoria urges better enforcement of wind farm rules

A new group has emerged calling for tighter regulations of the wind energy sector in Victoria.

Wind Industry Reform Victoria was incorporated last month and said it represented landowners across the state.

The group said better enforcement was needed of wind farm noise rules and it feared the State Government’s plan to cut the buffer zones between wind towers and properties.

President John McMahon said action was needed.

“We need to protect country Victorians from the worst effect of these,” he said.

Mr McMahon said a new independent body was also needed to enforce turbine noise restrictions.

“Regulations which protect the human rights of rural Victorians,” he said.

However, Andrew Bray from the pro-wind farm Australian Wind Alliance questioned the new group’s motives.

“Are they genuinely trying to reform wind development in Victoria or are they trying to stop wind development in Victoria?” he said.

Mr Bray said regulations were already in place.

“There’s testing before wind farms go up and then after they start construction,” he said.
