Another wind project proposed for Galloo Island

Galloo Island on Lake Ontario – Hounsfield’s town supervisor says it’s still perfect for wind power.

“This fits economic development and green energy to the T,” said Tim Scee, Hounsfield supervisor.

An Albany group, Hudson Energy Development, proposes 32 wind towers on the island.

That’s a lot smaller than an earlier developer wanted.

This time, the power would be routed underwater to Oswego County.

“That will alleviate a lot of concerns about the overland transmission line,” said Scee.

The proposal several years ago by Upstate New York Power failed because the developers couldn’t find anyone to buy the power.

So will this time be any different?

“That’s one of the hurdles that the developer will have to undergo,” said Scee.

We couldn’t reach the developers themselves for comment.

But if the plan goes ahead, there’d have to be a tax deal – one that would likely be lucrative for the Sackets Harbor School District, the town and the county.

The renewed project also renews hopes of more economic activity in Sackets Harbor.

The mayor remembers the plan last time.

“There were already arrangements being made for food service, lodging and transportation from our public dock,” said Vincent Battista, mayor.

Keep this in mind – the town supervisor calls this proposal “extremely preliminary.”
