Ill wind farm blows all Taralga’s TVs

The Gold Coast Bulletin | 13 February 2015 | www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au

SYDNEY: Don’t talk to the affable folk of Taralga about Australia’s summer of sport.

They’ve missed the lot.

When Taralga Wind Farm switched on its controversial wind turbines, perched about 1500m from the quaint Southern Highlands village, all the town’s TVs went on the blink just before Christmas.

After being inundated with complaints and denying responsibility, the wind farm relented and bought affected families within a 5km radius, a VAST satellite-connected set-top box at $360 a pop. But only one per family. For one TV.

“We like watching TV, and we have a few TVs in our houses,’’ protested Jeanette Simpson, owner of the Taralga General Store.

Terry Bennett has eight televisions in his house

“I had all those TVs working … now they don’t,’’ he said.

Families outside the 5km radius were not offered any boxes, despite suffering from severe reception interruption.

The wind farm is considering installing a re-transmitter tower and multiple set top boxes per household.
