Hundreds of wind farm submissions

A high level of interest has been expressed in the proposed Ballymanus Wind Farm which is currently seeking planning approval.

An application was lodged before Christmas by ABO Wind Limited with Wicklow County Council seeking permission to erect up to 12 150 metre turbines and has attracted over 430 submissions by members of the public including various elected representatives. Townlands included Roddenagh and Askakeagh are outlined in the plan.

According to South Wicklow Wind Action Group (SWWAG) which is opposed to the development a recent public meeting attended by over 300 people in Aughrim contributed to the high level of submissions.

‘Clearly the information given at the recent meeting has triggered this enormous community-wide response to a planning application submitted just two days before Christmas,’ said SWWAG spokesman Richard More-O’Ferrall. ‘Four of Wicklow’s five TDs as well as ten of our 31 councillors have made submissions and SWWAG has written to all other Wicklow-based public representatives urging them to express in all available public forums, their outright objection to this,’ added Mr More-O’Ferrall.

He added that the proposed development is an attempt to ‘ride rough-shod over residents and Wicklow’s non-renewable, archaeologically rich, unspoiled, scenic rural landscape.’

A decision is expected to be reached by the council by February 25.
