Reps. Bobby Kauffman, R-Wilton, and Pat Grassley, R-New Hartford, said they will present legislation to prevent an energy company from using eminent domain to obtain land for the creation of a 500-mile, $2 billion transmission line through Iowa.
The state lawmakers were joined at the Capitol by roughly 100 Iowa farmers whose land would be impacted by the proposed project, Kaufmann said.
Texas-based Clean Line Energy Partners has asked the Iowa Utilities Board to approve its plan for an overhead direct current transmission line that would deliver 3,500 megawatts of wind power from northwest Iowa to communities in Illinois and other states to the east that have little wind power potential but a strong demand for clean, reliable energy.
Kaufmann said the decision is too big a decision for a board of unelected appointees, and that an out-of-state company’s project that will provide no service to Iowa residents should not be allowed to use eminent domain for land acquisition.
