Giant turbine ‘will be blot’ on the Gobbins landscape

Views from the restored Gobbins cliff path could be blighted if a controversial wind turbine gets the go-ahead, it has been claimed.

Planners are recommending approval of the 46.5 metre turbine proposed by Whitehead Golf Club at McCrae’s Brae, but have received 40 letters of objection, according to the Carrick Times.

Planning Service says it will recommend approval when the application goes to Larne Borough Council on Monday evening.

Wind farm developer Peter Craig said he didn’t think people were sufficiently aware of the plans to appreciate the impact the turbine will have on views of Blackhead Path and the lighthouse. “It will also have an impact on views from the soon-to-be-opened Gobbins cliff path when looking back along the relatively untouched east coast of Islandmagee toward Blackhead,” he said.

“The visual impact of this development would be completely unacceptable – it would be a blot on the landscape.”

Whitehead Golf Club’s honourable secretary Robin Patrick said: “I take people’s concerns on this issue very seriously but we have followed the proper planning procedures and it is for the department to decide whether or not this development should go ahead.”
