Council sets aside £40,000 wind turbines war chest

Eden District Council has set aside £40,000 to fight a looming planning battle with the developers of a rejected wind farm.

REG Windpower Ltd. was refused permission by the council’s planning committee in October for its application to site four 426ft turbines at Hay Close Farm, Calthwaite.

Council officials have now received notice that the firm plans to appeal and the decision looks set to be tested at a public inquiry.

The application ranks as one of the most bitterly opposed in recent history for Eden Council planners. There were 400 objections from residents as well as concerns that the height of the turbines could interfere with Ministry of Defence radio signals.
