Wind turbine catches fire

OCOTILLO – A wind turbine caught fire around 2:30 p.m. today at Pattern Energy’s Ocotillo Wind Express wind farm.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, said Imperial County Fire Chief Tony Rouhotas, and it may be some time before the cause is determined. No one was injured in the fire.

The wind farm has been the source of some contention by residents who have vehemently opposed the project for years now. Safety concerns have been part of the basis of multiple lawsuits filed opposing the project.

In May 2013, a blade from one of the wind turbines fell and caused the project to be shut down for some time. Following further inspections, seven blades on the project were replaced.

Calls and an email to a representative of the wind farm have not yet been returned.
