Vestas probes Co Kerry blade loss

Vestas has launched an investigation after a blade on one of its V47 turbines detached and fell to the ground at a wind farm in County Kerry, Ireland.

The incident occurred last weekend at the 15.2MW Tursillagh wind farm near Tralee. The 23-turbine project is owned by Saorgus Energy and was commissioned in 2000.

The Danish manufacturer confirmed this morning that it has launched a probe to establish the cause.

“One blade on a V47 turbine detached from the turbine and fell to the ground,” the company said in a statement. “No injuries occurred as a result of this incident. The respective turbine was shut down.”

Vestas said all other turbines on the project are operating normally with no issues reported.

“The customer and Vestas are working closely together to determine the root cause of the incident,” added the manufacturer.

Nobody from Saorgus could be immediately contacted for comment.

The probe comes days after German manufacturer Nordex launched an investigation into the collapse of one of its N80 turbines at the 20MW Screggagh wind farm in Northern Ireland.
